Volterra

Volterra

How ever you get there, at each curve the landscape changes and offers breathtaking scenery, always different according to the light and various seasons.
Often, there are people who stop along the road to photograph or paint the countryside, watching the clouds dance in the sky and the waves of grain fly in the wind.
The sensation that one feels when approaching Volterra is that of a pleasant return to the past: the preserved land, the vast horizons, the pure nature, the  incredible architecture of antique homes, and up high in the splendid medieval village perfectly conserved with suggestive bits of  rooftops, as Etruscan and Roman testimonials mix with the present and the past.

Volterra

In the laboratories of long ago, artists who sculpted their prestigious alabaster pieces to the sound of music.

To feed their antique passion, Opera is often played in Volterra, at the Persio Flacco theatre which almost inevitably sold out.

Thanks to the Primavera Volterrana Association, numerous musical events are organized during the warm seasons in the gardens and plazas.

A great theatrical programme is offered during all of winter.
During the summer, in the month of July the Volterra Teatro Festival opens and has for 20 years transformed the city into a splendid stage under the stars for all types of artists who want to partecipate.

One particular success has been the representation of the Compagnia della Fortezza, a theatre workshop directed by Armando Punzo from the Colonia Penale di Volterra.

Volterra

On August, a medieval memorial takes place organized by the Tourist Consortium. In this occasion, the streets of the city are filled with sounds of antique medieval instrumentsn and that of the tamburo wich accompanies the
Volterran flag flying ceremony.
The Medieval week concludes with Astiludio, a tournament of flag flyer groups from various communities all around Italy.
Traditional cuisine is well represented by the numerous restaurants of the city where delicious dishes are accompanied with excellent wines produced in the area.
